SOLAR POWER

The rise in electricity prices coupled with the continuous lowering of solar power systems costs is increasingly making a strong business case for rooftop solar PV systems for the commercial and industrial sectors in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Today, for businesses that have ample roof space, the cost of generating their own power is much lower than the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) tariff of 29 fils per KWh.

This opportunity for savings via solar PV systems is characterized by

  • Mature technologies

  • Proven forecasting and financial modeling techniques

  • Quantifiable impact and predictable savings

As an example, a business which has 8,000 to 10,000 square meters of usable rooftop can deploy a 1 MW solar plant that can generate electricity for captive consumption at a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of around 20-21 fils over a minimum 25 year system life. This not only provides substantial savings over EWA tariffs, but also hedges the price of electricity over the life of the system. With these kinds of commercial benefits (not to mention the benefits to our environment) the solar question being asked by companies is changing from "do we need solar?" to "how much solar can we install?".

The case for solar is further strengthened by the introduction of the Net Metering regulations which allow companies to export any excess power generated back to the grid in return for credits that are offset in the electricity bill. This ensures that all power that is generated from a corporate solar PV system is either utilized offsetting a 29 fils/KWh cost or receives credit at 29 fils/KWh.
